Have you made the switch to natural deodorant yet?
It has long been known about the adverse effects using aerosols can have on us and the environment. However it’s not just spray deodorants we need to have an eye on. When looking at the ingredients list for a particular high street brand of roll-on deodorant, I’m struck by just how many “bad” or even just questionable ingredients jump out at me. We’ve got, (to list but a few), dimethicones (these have coating properties which prevent the skin from functioning normally), petrolatum derivatives e.g. mineral oils AKA paraffin, microcrystalline wax…these are all made of hydrocarbons and I don’t want to freak you out too much but CLICK HERE to read about what is wrong with hydrocarbons. Then there’s aluminium and silica, another dodgy couple of ingredients. ** I can already sense the heckler at the back – yes I know there is insufficient evidence to prove whether or not the aluminium in your [BRAND] deodorant will give us cancer in our lymph nodes but that’s not a good enough answer for me. I’m pretty sure that the Shea butter in my deodorants won’t be carcinogenic. Also, Mr Heckler, the big brand companies use mineral oils because its cheaper to do so. Before you ask me “if it’s so bad why do they do it?”
So until we have laws that control the amounts of mineral oil hydrocarbons in our body care products, the ingredient list is your best way to stay safe. Look out for products with microcrystalline wax on the label (it can also appear as Cera Microcristallina, Hydrogenated Microcrystalline Wax, or Caresin). Instead, go for natural, handmade body care products, made from vegetable oils and plant based waxes. (Ahem).
It might take a little getting used to is all. Instead of spraying chemical-loaded aerosols onto yourself, you take a bit of utterly lovely goodness on your finger and rub it into your arm pits. It’s that simple. Simple ingredients, simple to use.
Pick the aroma that works best for you and your body. This can mean a bit of trial and error but when essential oils are involved, I usually find that one particular product will “speak” to my nose more than any other.
I would generally work from the following:
Spearmint, Lemon & Lime – awakening, good for helping you to wake up in the morning with its stimulating, refreshing properties.
Lavender, Tea Tree & Chamomile – calming and soothing, also good for soothing sensitive/problem pits.
Cedarwood, Frankincense & Sandalwood – grounding, earthy. Warming and comforting. This is my Winter deo.
When you start the transition to natural deodorant, you might find yourself wishing to reapply it through out the day. It’s an easy fix, just make sure to keep it with you. Over time, your body will adjust to it. I’ve been using it for about a year now and I’m never going back to traditional antiperspirants. Another huge benefit of this deodorant range is that since it has no aluminium, it doesn’t ruin your shirts with yellow pit stains!
